The presentation will review the current capabilities of existing Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) networks with a focus on the European VLBI Network (EVN) and its real-time component (e-EVN). VLBI is addressing a wide variety of astronomical topics in stellar, galactic and extragalactic science, with also a number of interesting applications in astrometry and planetary science. A review of these will be given. The presentation will also draw prospects for future synergies and complementarity between VLBI and SKA in the next decade.
