HI is one of the most significant, if not the most significant contributor of mass to the interstellar medium of galaxies. I discuss what is known both theoretically and observationally about the distribution and characteristics of HI in both local and distant
 galaxies from absorption and emission lines. The general theme of my talk is a discussion of the important role that HI plays in the growth of galaxies and what interesting questions that a full SKA will be able to address.
