I will review the main observational methods used to detect and measure
cosmic magnetic fields in galaxies and in the intergalactic medium.
I will explain what the different methods have already told us about
the strength, direction and spatial distribution of these magnetic fields,
and I will discuss the new results that can be expected from LOFAR and SKA.
